Then I Think Of You

In the beginning of my journey, I spot a fox trotting away
Into a darkened forest.
It pauses to stare back at me a while
Before casting itself into the darkening forest.
Then I think of you.

Further on, I see a lioness
Who follows me awhile, nipping at my heels.
Her pelt as red as the Queen’s roses.
She too eventually follows the silent fox into the wood.
Then I think of you.

Towards the end of my path, I sight a horse.
Its legs stand high and proud,
And it constantly whinnies into my ear as I pass,
But leads itself into the Darkness.
Then I think of you.

At the end of my journey, I see an abandoned puppy.
Loving, innocent, and kind
Yearning for my love and presence.
The benevolent canine continues on with me till the end of my life’s journey
So that I may remember you.
